Tour Plan
After receiving a pick-up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and being driven to your hotel in Moshi Town, you will meet our guide, who will provide you with information about your forthcoming trip and ensure that you have all the equipment you need for the mountains. On this day, missing gear can be hired
This is an attractive day’s walking that enables you to clear the confines of the forest and secure your fist, with inspirational views of Kibo and Mawenzi. The steady climb through the more exposed, bleaker and moorland is relatively gentle. The path is clear and even, ensuring that 5–6 hours of gentle walking should see you arrive at the village-like Horombo Hut complex.
By this stage, the enormity of Kilimanjaro will begin to sink in. The 5–6-hour ascent from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut is a lengthy trudge across the very exposed, starkly beautiful Saddle that allows you to contemplate the great mound of Kibo rising ahead of you. As you plod across the barren highlands, you will be rewarded with great views of Kibo and Mawenzi, at least until the clouds boil in and obscure the summits.
Wake up around 23:00 to add more warm clothes and a head lamp. Leave the campsite and start summiting by midnight in the glacial zone. The path leads to Gilman’s Point (5681 m) after 6 hours of walking up to reach the sunrise at Stella Point. Take another 45 minutes or 1 hour at Uhuru Peak, 5895 m, the roof-top of Africa. Have time for pictures and a little rest while at the summit. After a short rest, start descending down to Kibo Hut, and it will take 3 hours to get to that hut for the short rest and lunch. After that rest and lunch, repack all your gear and descend down to Horombo Hut again, “pole pole” (slowly).
This final section is a very satisfying end to your Kilimanjaro experience. The descent is gentle and steady, and it passes through some very pleasant stretches of scenery. Walk slowly, enjoy the downhill gradient and look at the minutiae along the trail. You will also be able to see both Kibo and Mawenzi slip away from you.
You have the entire day to relax after a safari or trek before your return flight. You can see Moshi town, go on day trips, or get some souvenirs before leaving for the airport, depending on the time of your departure. If you want to explore Tanzania even further, there are add-ons like safari and Zanzibar
